The aim of modern psychoanalysis is to cure patients by freeing them of maladaptive and destructive repetitions that dominate their lives and behavior. WebTo be fully universal, psychoanalysis—a term Freud coined in 1896—would also have to examine the male psyche in a condition of what might be called normality. It would have to become more than a psychotherapy and develop into a complete theory of the mind.
